What is a Ship’s Camel?
Very hip name Ship camel but do you know it was really a tool for ships? A Ship’s Camel is the forerunner of the dry dock. In the Golden Age, when merchant ships from all over the world sailed to the port of Amsterdam, there was a problem for deep-sea sailing ships: the shallow depth at Pampus, in front of Amsterdam.
A ship’s camel was used to reduce the draught of a ship in order to cross the shallow waters off Amsterdam. Floats were tied to two sides of a ship. These floats were then pumped empty so that a deep-drafting merchant ship could be lifted over a shallow stretch of water.
